Directwriting is a term used across several fields to describe the process of applying text, symbols, or patterns directly onto a substrate without intermediate transfer steps, masks, or printed layers. In traditional contexts, direct writing refers to handwriting and calligraphy performed with a pen or similar instrument on paper or other media.

In manufacturing and microfabrication, direct-writing encompasses techniques that deposit or pattern material directly where it will remain, rather than through photolithography. Techniques include direct-write lithography using focused beams (electron beam, laser) and direct-write deposition methods such as ink-jet–like or aerosol-jet printing of conductive inks, laser-induced forward transfer, dip-pen nanolithography, and other additive direct-write processes. Direct writing is valued for its immediacy and information density, and for enabling user-friendly interfaces; in fabrication, it is valued for maskless patterning and reduced steps, though it can face limits in resolution, material compatibility, and speed.

Applications span education, art, and design to engineering and electronics, including prototyping of circuits, biosensors, and microelectromechanical systems.
