Proper dimensionarea ensures parts fit and function, enables quality control, and helps control manufacturing costs. Dimensions should be complete, unambiguous, and free of redundancy. They should reflect manufacturing realities, such as datum references and tolerance zones, and be presented following established conventions to avoid misinterpretation or error.

Standards guide dimensionarea practices. ISO 1101 and ASME Y14.5, among others, specify how to declare dimensions, datums, and geometric tolerances, as well as best practices for chaining, annotations, and modification. Adherence to these standards promotes interoperability across teams and suppliers.

Datum references anchor measurements to a defined coordinate system, while geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) provides a formal language to describe allowable shapes and orientations, enabling clearer communication of functional requirements.
