It is the passive form of the verb kemas, formed with the prefix di- to indicate that the action is performed on the object. In ordinary and commercial usage, dikemas describes a product that has undergone packaging and is ready for distribution or sale.

The word is often contrasted with phrases such as belum dikemas or belum kemas (not yet packaged) and terkemas, which can imply a state of being packaged or being wrapped.
