Diffraktionsspektren, also known as diffraction patterns, are the arrangements of light or other radiation that result from the phenomenon of diffraction. Diffraction occurs when waves encounter an obstacle or aperture whose size is comparable to their wavelength. Instead of continuing in a straight line, the waves spread out and interfere with each other. This interference can be constructive, leading to areas of high intensity, or destructive, resulting in areas of low intensity.

When a beam of light passes through a diffraction grating, which is a surface with many closely spaced parallel lines or slits, it diffracts and produces a characteristic pattern of bright and dark bands or spots. This pattern, the diffraktionsspektrum, is unique to the wavelength of the light. Different wavelengths of light will diffract at different angles, causing them to separate. This property is the basis for spectroscopy, where diffraktionsspektren are used to analyze the composition of light and identify the elements present in a light source.
