Differenstabiliteetin is a Finnish term that can be translated roughly as differential stability. In Finnish scientific usage it denotes the study of how the stability properties of a system respond to changes in its differential structure, such as small perturbations in parameters, equations, or inputs. The concept is closely linked to the broader idea of robustness: how reliably a system maintains its behavior under variation.

In dynamical systems and control theory, stability describes whether trajectories stay close to an equilibrium or desired trajectory. Differential stability focuses on how that stability changes when the underlying differential equations are perturbed. Typical methods involve linearization around equilibria and examining the Jacobian or linearized system, as well as sensitivity analysis that tracks how eigenvalues and other stability indicators shift with parameters. Lyapunov methods may be used to obtain stability criteria that are robust to certain perturbations, while bifurcation theory studies qualitative changes in stability as parameters pass critical values.

Applications span engineering, ecology, economics, and physics. For example, designers aim for robust controllers whose stability persists under component tolerances, while ecologists might assess how small environmental changes affect population stability. Limitations include the locality of many results (stability can be local rather than global), potential nonlinearity or stochastic effects that require alternative tools, and the challenge of translating theoretical stability into practical performance.
