diafragmaalne

Diafragmaalne is a term used in some languages to describe anything pertaining to the diaphragm, the dome-shaped musculotendinous partition that separates the thoracic and abdominal cavities and serves as the primary muscle of respiration.

The word derives from diafragma, the term for diaphragm, with a suffix that forms adjectives in certain linguistic traditions. It is not a standard English medical term; in English, diaphragmatic or diaphragmal are more commonly used.

Anatomy and function: The diaphragm consists of muscular fibers organized into sternal, costal, and lumbar parts, converging on a central tendon. It is innervated mainly by the phrenic nerves (C3–C5). When it contracts, the thoracic cavity expands and air is drawn into the lungs; relaxation enables passive exhalation. The diaphragm also influences intra-abdominal pressure and venous return, and its motion interacts with the mechanics of breathing and posture.

Clinical relevance: Conditions described in relation to the diaphragm include diaphragmatic hernia, diaphragmatic paralysis, diaphragmatic eventration, and diaphragmatic fatigue. Imaging modalities such as chest radiography, ultrasound, CT, or MRI can assess diaphragmatic position and movement. Management depends on the underlying condition and may involve surgical repair, respiratory support, or physical therapy.
