Diabetuksen is a Finnish term referring to diabetes mellitus, a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose (sugar). This condition arises from either the pancreas not producing enough insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar, or the body's cells not responding effectively to insulin.

There are several primary types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. It typically develops in childhood or adolescence and requires lifelong insulin therapy. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form and usually develops over time. In this type, the body becomes resistant to insulin, and eventually, the pancreas may not be able to produce enough insulin to keep blood glucose levels normal. Lifestyle factors such as obesity and lack of physical activity are significant contributors to type 2 diabetes. Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy and usually resolves after childbirth, but it increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life for both mother and child.

Symptoms of diabetuksen can include increased thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, increased hunger, fatigue, blurred vision, and slow-healing sores. Long-term complications of uncontrolled diabetes can affect various organs, leading to heart disease, kidney damage, nerve damage, and eye problems. Diagnosis is typically made through blood glucose tests. Management strategies involve lifestyle modifications such as diet and exercise, blood glucose monitoring, and in some cases, medication or insulin therapy.
