Devices metaphors refer to the use of comparisons or analogies to understand and describe technological devices. These metaphors help bridge the gap between our understanding of familiar concepts and the abstract or complex nature of new technologies. By relating a device to something we already know, we can more easily grasp its function, purpose, or even its potential impact.

Common devices metaphors include referring to the internet as an "information superhighway" or a "web." A computer's hard drive might be described as a "filing cabinet" or a "storage box." The central processing unit, or CPU, is often called the "brain" of the computer. Mobile phones are sometimes called "pocket computers" or "personal communicators." These analogies simplify complex internal workings into easily digestible concepts.

The effectiveness of devices metaphors lies in their ability to make the unfamiliar familiar. They can aid in user interface design, marketing, and general public understanding. However, metaphors can also be limiting or misleading. For instance, calling a smartphone a "phone" can obscure its much broader capabilities beyond simple voice communication.
