Detonatoren, or detonators, are devices designed to initiate explosive charges. They provide the energy necessary to convert a stable explosive into a detonation rather than a slow burn. Detonatoren are used in mining and quarrying, construction demolition, and in several military, aerospace, and pyrotechnic applications. They are designed to deliver a precise, reliable initiation to synchronize blasts and enhance safety by ensuring the main charge does not detonate prematurely.

Two broad categories are electric and non-electric detonators. Electric detonators contain a small bridgewire that heats when an electrical current is applied, igniting a primary explosive that starts the main charge. Non-electric detonators use chemical or pyrotechnic initiation methods; delayed detonators, fuse caps, tubing systems (shock-tubes), or detonating cords can transmit a detonation wave to the main charge without relying on electricity.

Some detonators incorporate safety features such as interlocks, tamper resistance, and environmental protection (waterproofing) for use in wet or hazardous environments.

History: The concept dates to percussion caps and early blasting devices in the 19th century; the development of reliable electric detonators in the late 19th and early 20th centuries improved control over blasting. Modern practice combines electric and non-electric systems with computerized timing in some settings.

Safety and regulation: Detonators are tightly regulated in many jurisdictions; handling, storage, transport, and use require licenses or permissions. They are considered hazardous materials; improper use can cause serious injury or damage.
