detept

Detept is a term used in theoretical informatics and cognitive science to refer to a mechanism by which a system infers the presence of a hidden state or event from incomplete or noisy evidence. The term combines detection and perception to highlight the inferential aspect of decision making that goes beyond simple signal recognition.

Conceptually, detept treats detection as a probabilistic inference task. A hidden state S is inferred from observations O1, O2, ..., Ok. A posterior probability P(S|O) is computed, and a detection is declared when this posterior exceeds a context-dependent threshold T. Evidence from different modalities can be fused, and the threshold may adapt over time based on risk, cost, and feedback.

Variants in literature include strong detept, requiring high confidence before alarm, and weak detept, allowing earlier signals to trigger provisional conclusions subject to revision.

Criticism centers on practical limits: susceptibility to false positives, dependence on model assumptions, and potential privacy or accountability concerns when used for surveillance. Proponents emphasize its emphasis on perceptual interpretation as distinct from low-level signal processing.

Etymology is unclear; detept appears in a small body of theory and speculative writing and has not achieved broad consensus as a standard term. It is sometimes used as a shorthand for the perceptual aspect of detection in discussions of intelligent systems.
