The detective, whether a professional law enforcement officer or an amateur sleuth, must use their intellect, observation skills, and deductive reasoning to solve the case.

The origins of the detective genre can be traced back to Edgar Allan Poe's "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" in 1841, which introduced C. Auguste Dupin as one of literature's earliest fictional detectives. The process of solving a crime in a detective narrative usually involves the detective gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing clues. Red herrings, false leads, and complex motives are common elements designed to mislead the reader and heighten the suspense. The climax often involves the detective revealing the culprit and explaining how they deduced the truth, bringing the mystery to a satisfying conclusion.
