Desfurating is a chemical process that removes sulfur‑containing compounds from a material, most commonly used in the treatment of petroleum products, industrial gases, and solid fuels. The term is often used interchangeably with desulfurization, though some literature distinguishes desfurating as the specific stage of sulfur removal after preliminary refining steps. The primary goal is to reduce emissions of sulfur oxides (SO x) that contribute to acid rain, air‑quality degradation, and corrosion of equipment.

The most widely employed industrial method is hydrodesulfurization (HDS), which involves reacting the feedstock with hydrogen under elevated temperature (300–400 °C) and pressure (30–130 atm) in the presence of a catalyst, typically molybdenum or cobalt sulfide supported on alumina. Alternative techniques include oxidative desulfurization, which uses oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide or peroxides to convert sulfur compounds into extractable sulfonates, and adsorptive desulfurization, which relies on solid sorbents like activated carbon or metal‑organic frameworks to capture sulfur species.

Desfurating is critical in the production of low‑sulfur diesel, gasoline, and jet fuels that must meet stringent regulatory limits, such as the United States Clean Air Act Tier 3 standards (≤15 ppm sulfur). In the petrochemical sector, sulfur removal protects downstream catalysts from poisoning. The process also applies to coal cleaning, where chemical leaching or biological methods reduce sulfur content before combustion, improving efficiency and lowering pollutant output.

Challenges in desfurating arise from the need to eliminate refractory sulfur compounds, such as dibenzothiophene, which require more severe reaction conditions or advanced catalysts. Research continues on developing cost‑effective, environmentally benign approaches, including biodesulfurization using microorganisms and ionic‑liquid based solvents. The ongoing evolution of desfurating technologies reflects the balance between meeting emission regulations, maintaining fuel performance, and minimizing industrial energy consumption.
