Dentalakrylater, or dental acrylic resins, are polymer-based materials used in dentistry. The most common form is polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), which is widely used for denture bases and, in some cases, denture teeth and provisional restorations.

Composition and processing: Dental acrylic resins are typically supplied as a powder-liquid system. The powder consists of polymethyl methacrylate beads; the liquid is methyl methacrylate monomer. A polymerization initiator, commonly benzoyl peroxide, is included, and cross-linking agents such as ethylene glycol dimethacrylate may be added. They can be cured by heat (heat-cured resins) or by chemical activation at room temperature (self-curing or auto-polymerizing resins). After mixing, the dough is formed, placed in a mold, and cured to form a hard acrylic polymer; finishing and polishing follow to achieve a smooth surface.

Properties and applications: Acrylic resins offer good aesthetics, color stability, and relatively low cost, and are easy to process. They provide adequate strength for denture bases and allow for chairside repairs. Limitations include brittleness, wear compared with some ceramics, and potential water sorption leading to dimensional changes or staining. Residual unpolymerized monomer can cause tissue irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals, so adequate curing and ventilation are important.

Safety and regulation: As a dental material, dental acrylic resins are subject to biocompatibility testing and standards set by bodies such as ISO and regulatory organizations. Proper handling, curing, and finishing reduce risks associated with residual monomer. They require periodic replacement or relining as wear or fracture occurs.
