Demipermanenta, commonly called demi-permanent hair color, is a hair dye product designed to deposit color on the hair shaft with minimal or no lifting of the natural pigment. It sits between permanent color and semi-permanent color, typically lasting longer than most semi-permanents but shorter than permanent dyes.

Most formulas are oxidative dyes that use a low-volume developer, usually 5 volume hydrogen peroxide, or in some formulations are direct-dye based with little or no peroxide. The color molecules penetrate the cuticle and tint the cortex without significantly lightening natural pigment, and fade gradually with washing.

Common uses include refreshing tone or shade, blending lightened or gray roots, adding shine, and toning pale colors. Processing times range from 20 to 40 minutes. In practice, demi-permanent color typically lasts about 12 to 24 washes, depending on hair porosity, brand, and washing routine.

Pros include gentler chemistry, no severe pigment lift, and lower maintenance. Cons include limited gray coverage and color longevity compared with permanent dyes; reapplication is usually required to maintain shade. Patch tests are advised, and professionals tailor shade choice and processing to individual hair conditions and goals.
