Delaware is a Mid-Atlantic state in the United States, bordered by Pennsylvania to the north, Maryland to the south and west, New Jersey across the Delaware River and Bay to the northeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. It is nicknamed the First State for being the first to ratify the U.S. Constitution on December 7, 1787. The state capital is Dover, and the largest city is Wilmington. Delaware covers about 1,950 square miles and has a population just under two million.

Delaware’s economy is service-oriented, with a long-standing prominence in corporate law and business incorporation. The state is known for its Court of Chancery, which handles many corporate disputes. Delaware also supports port facilities, logistics, manufacturing, and financial services. The absence of a statewide sales tax and business-friendly laws have attracted many corporations to incorporate there.

Historically, the area was inhabited by the Lenape before European colonization. It was part of New Sweden in the 17th century, later controlled by the Dutch and then the English. In 1704 Delaware established its own colonial assembly and, after the American Revolution, joined the United States as the first state in 1787.

Delaware’s symbols include the peach blossom as the state flower and the blue hen as the state bird. Notable institutions include the University of Delaware in Newark and Delaware State University. The state emphasizes a business-friendly climate, access to the broader Mid-Atlantic region, and a diversified economy that spans industry, education, and government services.
