Deicers are substances used to melt or prevent the formation of ice. They are commonly applied to roads, sidewalks, and aircraft to improve safety and maintain transportation flow during winter weather. The most common deicers are salts, such as sodium chloride (rock salt), calcium chloride, and magnesium chloride. These salts work by lowering the freezing point of water. When a salt dissolves in water, it dissociates into ions, which interfere with the hydrogen bonding of water molecules, making it more difficult for them to arrange themselves into a rigid ice crystal structure.

Different types of salts have varying effectiveness at different temperatures. Calcium chloride and magnesium chloride are generally more effective than sodium chloride at lower temperatures. Other deicing agents include urea, potassium acetate, and calcium acetate. Urea is often used on airport runways as it is less corrosive to aircraft materials than some salts. Potassium acetate and calcium acetate are more environmentally friendly options, though typically more expensive.

The use of deicers can have environmental impacts. Salt runoff can contaminate soil and water sources, harming vegetation and aquatic life. The corrosion caused by deicers can also damage infrastructure, including bridges and vehicles. Research continues into developing more effective and environmentally benign deicing technologies, such as brines (saltwater solutions) applied pre-emptively or alternative materials derived from agricultural byproducts.
