Dehiscent is a botanical term describing a structure, typically a fruit or sporangium, that opens at maturity to release its contents, usually seeds or spores. This contrasts with indehiscent structures, which do not open spontaneously at maturity. Dehiscence is a common seed-dispersal strategy in many flowering plants and some ferns and fungi.

In fruits, dehiscence occurs when the pericarp splits along predetermined lines. Legumes and pods typically split along two sutures to release seeds. Capsules may dehisce by splitting along septa (septicidal) or along the walls of the locules (loculicidal); some species release seeds through pores. Siliques, a form found in the mustard family, split to reveal seeds along a seam, often with a persistent replum. Dehiscence can also occur explosively in some capsules, aiding rapid seed dispersal.

In sporangia and anthers, dehiscence serves to release spores or pollen. In ferns and many bryophytes, sporangia open to shed spores; in many flowering plants, anthers dehisce to expose pollen for pollination.

Ecological and practical relevance includes its role in dispersal timing and mechanisms, as well as its usefulness in taxonomy and horticulture. Environmental cues such as drying, temperature changes, or mechanical disturbance often trigger opening. Understanding whether a fruit is dehiscent or indehiscent helps explain its dispersal strategy and potential agricultural handling.
