The Deerhound requires regular exercise to maintain its physical and mental well-being. Daily walks and opportunities to run in a safe, enclosed area are beneficial. Their grooming needs are moderate; their rough coat requires occasional brushing to prevent matting and keep it in good condition.

Historically, the Deerhound was highly prized by Scottish nobility for its prowess in the hunt. The breed's popularity declined with the decline of deer hunting as a sport, but it has seen a resurgence in recent times as a companion animal. They are not suited for apartment living due to their size and exercise needs.
