Deeperdiving is a term used to describe diving activities conducted at depths beyond conventional recreational limits. In practice, it encompasses technical diving, mixed-gas diving, and planned decompression, where divers use gas plans and staged ascents rather than staying within no-decompression profiles.

Recreational diving commonly limits depth to about 40 meters (130 feet). Deeperdiving typically begins below this threshold and can extend to 60–100 meters (200–330 feet) or more, depending on training, gas supply, and risk tolerance. Dives at these depths require careful planning, conservative gas management, and explicit contingency procedures because decompression obligations and other hazards increase with depth.

Techniques and equipment include the use of multiple gas mixtures, such as bottom gas and decompression gases; staged decompression; extensive gas management and redundant systems; complex buoyancy and ascent control; and equipment like multiple cylinders, regulators, and sometimes rebreathers. Dive support may include DSMBs, surface marker buoys, and standby gas or bailout cylinders.

Training and safety: Deeperdiving requires certification from recognized technical diving organizations. Training covers gas planning, decompression theory, ascent and bailout procedures, equipment configuration, and emergency management. Risks include decompression sickness, nitrogen narcosis, oxygen toxicity, and hazards from entanglement, silt, and equipment failure. Strict standards and procedures aim to reduce these risks.

History and context: Deeperdiving developed alongside advances in scuba technology, mixed gases, and decompression scheduling during the late 20th century. It is practiced by recreational divers with technical training and by professional divers, and it remains subject to ongoing research and regulation within diving communities.
