Deconvolutioni is a signal processing technique used to estimate an unknown signal from two other signals, where one signal is the recorded observation and the other is the known or estimated impulse response of the system through which the original signal passed. Essentially, it is the inverse process of convolution. When a signal is processed by a system, the output signal is the convolution of the input signal and the system's impulse response. Deconvolution aims to recover the original input signal by undoing this convolution.

The process can be visualized as trying to "unmix" or "sharpen" a signal that has been blurred or distorted by a known process. For instance, if an image has been blurred by a camera's focus or motion, deconvolution can be used to try and restore a sharper version of the original image. In audio processing, deconvolution might be used to remove reverberation or echoes from a recorded sound.

Various mathematical methods exist for deconvolution, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Simple deconvolution often involves dividing the Fourier transform of the observed signal by the Fourier transform of the impulse response. However, this can be highly sensitive to noise. More advanced techniques, such as Wiener deconvolution or Lucy-Richardson deconvolution, incorporate noise reduction strategies or iterative refinement to produce more robust results, especially when dealing with noisy or incomplete data. The effectiveness of deconvolution depends heavily on the accuracy of the known impulse response and the signal-to-noise ratio of the observed data.
