A decompressiekamer, or decompression chamber, is a pressurized environment used to treat decompression sickness, commonly known as "the bends." This condition can affect divers who ascend too quickly from deep water, causing dissolved gases in their body to form bubbles. These bubbles can obstruct blood flow and cause pain, paralysis, or even death.

In a decompression chamber, a patient is exposed to a controlled increase in atmospheric pressure, gradually reintroducing them to higher pressures. This process allows the dissolved gases within their tissues to slowly return to their dissolved state, preventing the formation of bubbles. The pressure is then slowly reduced over a period of hours, mimicking a slow ascent from a dive. This allows the body to safely release the excess gases.

Decompression chambers are also utilized in hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). During HBOT, patients breathe 100% oxygen while inside the chamber at a pressure greater than normal atmospheric pressure. This increases the amount of oxygen dissolved in the blood, which can aid in healing for various conditions, including certain wounds, infections, and carbon monoxide poisoning. The use of decompression chambers requires trained personnel to ensure patient safety and the proper administration of therapy.
