Decelarar is the act of reducing speed or the rate at which something changes its motion. In everyday Spanish, decelerar means to slow down, whether a vehicle, a machine, or a process. Alternatives such as desacelerar or disminuir la velocidad are also common; desacelerar is often preferred in standard usage, while decelerar appears in technical or regional contexts.

In physics, deceleration refers to the rate of change of velocity with respect to time when the speed decreases. It is a negative acceleration, with magnitude measured in meters per second squared (m/s^2). The relation a = Δv/Δt expresses how velocity changes over time. Deceleration can arise from braking, drag, or any force acting opposite to motion, and it is a key factor in determining forces on objects and passengers.

Practically, deceleration is encountered in driving, where braking produces controlled deceleration, or in engineering where systems regulate motion or cycles. In safety engineering, the rate of deceleration is analyzed to ensure structures and occupants withstand the forces involved; decelerations are often expressed in g-forces, where 1 g is about 9.81 m/s^2.
