Debatanalyses is the systematic study of debates and argumentation. It examines how participants construct claims, support them with evidence, respond to objections, and attempt to persuade audiences. The field covers formal settings such as political debates, academic policy forums, and courtroom argumentation as well as informal debates in media, social platforms, and online communities. Debatanalyses seeks to understand both content and form, including rhetorical strategies, logical structure, and discourse dynamics across cultures.

Methodologies include qualitative and quantitative approaches. Theoretical frameworks such as argumentation theory (including the Toulmin model), pragma-dialectics, and rhetorical analysis guide coding of claims, warrants, backing, rebuttals, and qualifiers. Researchers use transcripts and video to perform discourse analysis, content analysis, and computational methods like argument mining, stance detection, sentiment analysis, and topic modeling. Outcomes may include classifications of argument strength, detection of logical fallacies, and measurements of persuasiveness.

Applications include political communication analysis, media literacy, education, and the design of AI systems capable of engaging in or moderating debates. Debatanalyses can help assess policy proposals, track shifts in public opinion, and identify manipulation or misinformation tactics.

Challenges include ensuring data quality and representativeness, cross-cultural differences, transcription errors, inferring speaker intent, sarcasm and irony, ethical considerations, privacy concerns, and the risk of overgeneralization from limited datasets.
