Cytometrists are laboratory professionals who perform cytometric analyses to measure characteristics of cells and other particles. Using instruments such as flow cytometers and imaging cytometers, they assess size, granularity, and the expression of cellular markers by detecting fluorescent labels. They prepare specimens, optimize staining protocols, and run analyses, often designing gating strategies to identify subpopulations. They also perform routine instrument maintenance, calibrations, quality control, and data management, and they interpret results for clinicians and researchers.

Techniques and concepts include flow cytometry, fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS), and imaging flow cytometry; multiparameter analysis; spectral cytometry; cell sorting to purify populations; intracellular staining; cell cycle, apoptosis, and proliferation assays. Cytometrists work with samples such as peripheral blood, bone marrow, solid tissue, and cell cultures, and they may adapt protocols for different research or diagnostic needs.

Applications encompass clinical and research settings. In clinical laboratories, cytometrists perform immunophenotyping to diagnose leukemias and lymphomas, monitor immune status after transplantation or therapy, assess minimal residual disease (MRD), and contribute to hematology and immunology testing. In research and biotechnology, they study cell signaling, phenotype, and function, and in manufacturing they support quality control for cell-based therapies and other biologics.

Training and qualifications typically include a bachelor’s degree in biology, biomedical sciences, or a related field, followed by specialized cytometry training and hands-on experience. Certification may be pursued through national bodies such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) in the United States; requirements vary by country. Ongoing education in data analysis, software, and biosafety is common in the field.
