A cutting room is a space, either physical or virtual, where footage from a film, television show, or other visual media is edited. In traditional film production, this space was a dedicated room where editors would physically cut and splice pieces of film. With the advent of digital technology, the cutting room has largely transitioned to a digital environment, often referred to as an editing suite.

The primary function of the cutting room is to assemble raw footage into a cohesive and compelling narrative. This involves selecting the best takes, arranging them in sequence, and making decisions about pacing, rhythm, and tone. The term "cutting room floor" refers to the discarded footage that does not make it into the final edit. This can include alternate takes, scenes that were cut for pacing or story reasons, or technically flawed shots. Historically, this was literally the floor of the physical cutting room where scraps of film would accumulate.

Modern cutting rooms are equipped with sophisticated editing software and hardware, allowing for complex manipulations of image and sound. While the tools have evolved dramatically, the fundamental role of the cutting room in shaping the final story remains the same. It is a crucial creative hub in the post-production process.
