Csontvelgyulladás, often referred to as osteomyelitis in medical terminology, is a serious infection of the bone. This condition can affect any bone in the body, but it is most common in the long bones of the arms and legs. Osteomyelitis can occur in people of all ages, from infants to the elderly.

The infection can be caused by bacteria, fungi, or other microorganisms. These pathogens can reach the bone in several ways. They may travel through the bloodstream from an infection elsewhere in the body (hematogenous spread), or they can directly infect the bone following an injury, surgery, or puncture wound. Conditions like diabetes, poor circulation, and weakened immune systems can increase the risk of developing osteomyelitis.

Symptoms of csontvelgyulladás can vary but often include localized pain in the affected bone, swelling, redness, and warmth over the area. A fever is also common. In some cases, a draining sinus tract may form, releasing pus from the infected bone.

Diagnosis typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, blood tests to check for infection markers, and imaging studies such as X-rays, MRI, or CT scans. Bone biopsy may also be performed for definitive diagnosis and identification of the causative organism.

Treatment for osteomyelitis usually requires a prolonged course of antibiotics, administered intravenously or orally. In severe cases or when there is significant bone damage, surgical intervention may be necessary to remove infected or dead bone tissue and to drain any abscesses. Prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent complications, which can include chronic osteomyelitis, bone deformity, or sepsis.
