Családjogra, or family law, is the branch of law that governs relationships between family members and related matters. In Hungary it forms part of civil law and is primarily codified in the Civil Code along with related statutes. The field addresses both substantive rights and procedural mechanisms in matters affecting family life.

Its core topics include marriage and registered partnerships, the dissolution of marriages, parental rights and duties, child custody and visitation, child support, and maintenance obligations. It also covers the recognition and effects of parentage, adoption and guardianship, emancipation of minors, and issues arising from legitimacy within family life. In addition, family law regulates protective measures in cases of domestic violence and the resolution of parental disputes through mediation or court proceedings.

Procedurally, family law matters are handled by general civil courts under civil procedure rules, with guardianship authorities and child welfare services involved in specific cases. Enforcement of judgments and cross-border matters follow national law and international agreements; Hungary participates in European Union instruments and international treaties that affect recognition of foreign judgments, parental responsibility, and child abduction cases.

History and development: Modern Hungarian family law has evolved through 20th-century reforms and subsequent alignment with European private international law after EU integration. The framework aims to protect children's welfare, ensure parental responsibilities, and provide predictable remedies for spouses and guardians.
