Cryogenfree refers to cooling or operating at cryogenic temperatures without the use of liquid cryogens for ongoing cooling. Instead, these systems employ closed-cycle cryocoolers to remove heat and reach temperatures typically around 4 kelvin, with some configurations capable of accessing millikelvin regimes through additional stages. The term contrasts with traditional cryogenic setups that require periodic replenishment of liquid helium or nitrogen.

Technologically, cryogenfree devices combine a cryocooler—such as a pulse-tube, Stirling, or Gifford–McMahon cooler—with a cryostat that houses thermal shields and a cold finger or cold stage that interfaces with the device, often a superconducting magnet. The cooling is continuous, and evaporated gas is recondensed within a closed loop, eliminating the need for regular cryogen refills. Some designs include a warm or intermediate stage, and a small liquid-cryogen reservoir may be present only to aid initial cooldown or function as a brief backup, but it is not the primary cooling method.

Applications of cryogenfree technology are broad. It is widely used for superconducting magnets in MRI and NMR systems, as well as in high-field research magnets and various quantum devices. Cryogen-free dilution refrigerators enable ultralow temperatures for quantum computing experiments and fundamental physics research, expanding access by removing dependence on helium supply chains.

Advantages include independence from continuous cryogen supply, reduced operational complexity in the long term, and easier site deployment. Challenges can include higher initial cost, mechanical vibrations and acoustic noise from the cryocoolers, and robust maintenance and power requirements to ensure stable operation and adequate heat sinking.
