Cryofocused is a term used to describe processes, devices, or phenomena that concentrate or apply cryogenic temperatures to a localized target. The word combines cryo-, meaning cold or cryogenic, with focused, indicating directed energy or influence. There is no single formal definition; usage varies by discipline.

In medicine, cryofocusing refers to targeted cooling used in cryotherapy and cryosurgery. A cryoprobe or spray delivers a controlled cold front to a lesion or tissue, aiming to destroy abnormal tissue while limiting injury to surrounding structures. Temperature, exposure time, and the geometry of the cooling surface are carefully managed to shape the treatment area.

In scientific instrumentation, cryogenic cooling provides enhanced performance and can enable focused optical or detector operation. Cryogenic optics and detectors reduce thermal noise and often require precisely aligned, low-temperature elements such as lenses, filters, and shields. In detector physics and accelerator science, cryogenic environments improve beam focusing and signal fidelity by stabilizing components and reducing thermal expansion.

In materials processing, cryofocused cooling can be used to control phase changes or fracture behavior by concentrating cooling at specific features, improving process control in grinding, cutting, or additive manufacturing.

Limitations of cryofocusing include the need for robust thermal management, potential thermal stress, added system complexity and cost, and safety concerns related to handling extremely cold fluids and gases.
