Crossrollup is a proposed interoperability concept in blockchain scalability that envisions direct communication and value transfer between distinct rollups operating on potentially different base-layer networks. Each rollup maintains its own execution environment and data availability, while exposing standardized interfaces for messages and proofs to other rollups. The aim is to extend cross-application functionality and liquidity without returning users to the base layer.

In practice, crossrollup relies on a registry on the base chain and on verifiable cross-rollup proofs. When Rollup A wishes to send assets or data to Rollup B, a cross-rollup message is created, posted as a proof or batched data to the base chain, and validated by B’s light client. On success, the corresponding state transition is applied on B.

Key architectural components include a cross-rollup registry, cross-rollup bridges or routers, light clients embedded in each rollup, and a data availability layer for cross-rollup payloads. Some designs consider optimistic proofs for finality and zero-knowledge proofs to compress verification, leading to different latency and security profiles.

Security considerations center on data availability, bridge or relay security, and cross-rollup proof validity. Potential risks include misordered messages, replay, fraud proof delays, and vulnerabilities in the cross-rollup registry. Robust incentives, dispute windows, and standardized interfaces are essential to mitigate these risks.

Status: Crossrollup remains largely in the research and proposal phase, with no universal standard or broad deployment. If realized, it could enable unified liquidity and cross-dapp interactions across Layer 2 ecosystems, but it would require careful design to balance security, performance, and developer friendliness.
