Crevicekestävyyttä is a Finnish term that translates to "crevice corrosion resistance" in English. It refers to the ability of a material, particularly metals, to withstand corrosion that occurs in narrow gaps or crevices. This type of corrosion is particularly insidious because it can be difficult to detect and can lead to significant material degradation even when the bulk of the material appears unaffected.

The formation of a crevice typically requires a shielding of the metal surface from the bulk environment. This can happen in areas where two surfaces are joined together, under deposits, or in areas where there are biological growths. Within the crevice, the electrolyte can become stagnant, leading to differential aeration. This means that the concentration of oxygen inside the crevice becomes lower than in the surrounding environment.

This oxygen concentration difference drives an electrochemical process. Metal ions are released within the crevice, and as they attempt to migrate out, they can hydrolyze, producing hydrogen ions and lowering the pH. The acidic conditions within the crevice then accelerate the corrosion rate. The presence of halide ions, such as chloride, can further exacerbate crevice corrosion by breaking down passive films and promoting the anodic dissolution of the metal.

Materials with good crevicekestävyyttä are often those that can form a stable, passive oxide layer on their surface, such as certain stainless steels and nickel alloys. However, even these materials can be susceptible under certain conditions.
