CounterReformations refers to the Catholic Church's response to the Protestant Reformation in the 16th and 17th centuries. The term is used to describe both internal reforms and external actions aimed at reaffirming Catholic doctrine and renewing Catholic society, roughly from the mid-1540s to the end of the Thirty Years' War in 1648.

Central to the CounterReformation was the Council of Trent (1545–1563), which clarified Catholic doctrine, reaffirmed key beliefs such as transubstantiation, the seven sacraments, and the authority of Scripture and Tradition, and initiated broad reforms of church discipline, including the establishment of seminaries for priestly training.

Other important components were the reforming papacy, the Roman Inquisition, and the Index of Forbidden Books. The Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), founded in 1540, played a major role in education, missionary work, and intellectual defense of Catholicism. New religious orders, renewed episcopal oversight, and standardized liturgy spread Catholic identity beyond Europe.

The CounterReformations also involved political dimensions, aligning with Catholic monarchs, combating Protestant rulers, and influencing policies in the Holy Roman Empire and elsewhere. It contributed to the restoration of Catholic power in parts of Europe and the expansion of Catholic missions in the Americas, Asia, and Africa. Baroque art and architecture accompanied Catholic revival as a means to inspire devotion and demonstrate Catholic authority.

Critics describe it as a defensive and reformist movement within the Catholic Church; it did not end Protestantism but reshaped its course and prolonged Catholic influence in many regions.
