A counterargument is an argument presented to oppose a claim or position. In argumentative writing and debate, it involves acknowledging an opposing viewpoint and offering evidence or reasoning intended to challenge it or reveal its limitations.

The purpose of a counterargument is to strengthen the overall argument by showing engagement with opposing views, improving credibility, and addressing objections before they arise in the audience. It helps demonstrate critical thinking and fairness, which can make a position more persuasive even to skeptical readers.

Common forms include direct refutation, in which the counterclaim is shown to be incorrect or incomplete; concession with rebuttal, where a valid aspect of the opposing view is acknowledged but the writer explains why the main claim still stands; and nuanced counterarguments that recognize trade-offs or complexities.

Structure typically places counterarguments after the initial presentation of the main claim and evidence, or interwoven within the discussion. A signal phrase such as "Some may argue that..." introduces the opposing view, followed by a concise presentation of that view and relevant evidence. The section closes with a rebuttal that explains why the main claim remains valid, often linking back to evidence supporting the original position.

Quality counterarguments are relevant, accurately described, specific, and fairly represented. They rely on credible evidence and avoid misrepresentation or straw man tactics. In addition to essays, counterarguments are common in debates, policy analysis, journalism, and legal reasoning.
