A corroboree is a traditional gathering of Indigenous Australians involving music, dance, and ceremonies. These events are deeply embedded in the cultural and spiritual life of many Aboriginal groups, serving as a way to pass down knowledge, reinforce social bonds, and connect with the Dreamtime. Corroborees are not a single, uniform practice but rather a diverse set of rituals that vary significantly between different language groups and regions across Australia.

The term "corroboree" itself was introduced by European colonists and is not universally used by Indigenous peoples to describe their own gatherings. However, it has become the common English term. A corroboree typically involves storytelling through song, dance, and often elaborate body paint and decorations. The movements and rhythms are symbolic, often representing animals, ancestral beings, or historical events. Music is created using traditional instruments such as the didgeridoo, clapsticks, and gum leaves, alongside chanting and vocalizations.

These gatherings are important social events, allowing different family groups and clans to come together, share resources, arrange marriages, and settle disputes. They are also crucial for the transmission of cultural heritage, ensuring that traditional laws, customs, and spiritual beliefs are maintained and passed on to younger generations.
