In philosophical and theological Latin, the word can refer to the intellect’s activity of beholding truth as such, as well as to a particular form of spiritual experience.

In classical and medieval philosophy, contemplation denotes the highest form of intellectual activity. It is frequently described as the direct, non-discursive grasp of first principles or ultimate truths, often viewed as the end toward which human reasoning naturally tends. This sense emphasizes quiet, steady attention and the union of mind with truth, rather than practical or instrumental thinking.

In Christian mysticism, contemplatio denotes a form of prayer and spiritual activity in which God is perceived or encountered beyond ordinary discursive reasoning. It is commonly distinguished from active or meditative prayer by its emphasis on receptivity, stillness, and the sense of divine presence. Within Catholic theology, a distinction is made between acquired contemplation—achieved through disciplined practice and discernment—and infused contemplation, considered a grace imparted by God that enables a more intimate union with the divine.
