constructors

Constructors are special methods that initialize a newly created object. They are invoked automatically during object instantiation and are used to set initial field values, acquire resources, and enforce class invariants. A constructor does not return a value; it prepares the new object for use.

Most languages distinguish constructors by name, behavior, and access rules. They often support overloading to provide multiple initialization options and may implement default construction if no explicit constructor is defined. Constructors can participate in constructor chaining, calling another constructor to reuse initialization code.

In C++, constructors are member functions with the same name as the class and no return type. They can be default, copy, or move constructors and may use member initializer lists. Since C++11, constructors can delegate to other constructors. Copy and move constructors define copy and move semantics for objects.

In Java, constructors have the class name and no return type. They can be overloaded and can chain via this(...) or call a superclass constructor via super(...). If no constructor is defined, a default no-argument constructor is provided by the compiler.

In Python, __init__ is an initializer, not a true constructor. The actual object is created by __new__, and __init__ initializes the instance’s attributes after creation.

Other languages, such as C#, follow similar patterns to Java, allowing overloading and base-class constructor calls via base(...). In JavaScript (ES6 classes), the constructor method is invoked with new, and derived classes must call super() before using this.

Constructors aim to ensure objects start in a valid state; they may be paired with destructors or finalizers for resource cleanup, or complemented by factory methods that encapsulate complex initialization.
