Composted leaf, also known as leaf mold, is a soil amendment created from decomposed leaves. It is a dark, crumbly material that is rich in organic matter and nutrients. Leaf mold is an excellent soil conditioner, improving soil structure, water retention, and aeration. It can be used in gardens, flower beds, and as a top dressing for lawns.

The composting process for leaves typically involves collecting fallen leaves in the autumn and either piling them up in a designated area or placing them in a compost bin. While leaves can be composted on their own, they are considered a "brown" material in composting terminology, meaning they are rich in carbon. To achieve faster decomposition and a more balanced nutrient profile, it is often recommended to mix them with "green" materials, such as grass clippings or kitchen scraps, which are high in nitrogen. However, leaves will decompose over time even when composted alone.

The decomposition of leaves is primarily carried out by fungi and other microorganisms. This process can take anywhere from six months to two years, depending on factors like the type of leaves, moisture levels, and aeration. Shredding the leaves before composting can significantly speed up the process. Once the leaves have broken down into a dark, earthy-smelling material, they are considered leaf mold and are ready to be incorporated into the soil. Leaf mold is particularly beneficial for sandy soils, helping them retain moisture, and for clay soils, improving their drainage and aeration.
