Commuting pattern refers to the regular travel behavior of people as they move between home and work or other routine destinations. It describes where trips start and end, the modes used, the times and frequencies, and the routes commonly taken. Researchers analyze commuting patterns to understand how people move through urban space and how transportation systems support daily life.

Common measurements include origin–destination matrices, mode shares, travel times, travel distances, and trip frequencies. Analyses are typically conducted at the household or person level and can vary by day of week, season, and demographic group.

Data sources include household travel surveys, census and population data, and increasingly anonymized mobility data from mobile devices or apps. Modeling approaches range from simple gravity or radiation models to more detailed network simulations and agent-based models for route choice and behavior.

Patterns are shaped by urban form and land use, housing affordability, job locations, transit availability, road capacity, and policy interventions. In many cities, commuting shows a monocentric pattern with flows toward a central business district, while others exhibit polycentric patterns with multiple employment centers. Peak-period congestion, mode shares, and average commuting times are common descriptors.

Applications include transportation planning, transit service design, congestion management, and emissions accounting. Limitations include privacy and sampling biases in data, the distinction between work and non-work trips, and changes over time from telecommuting and external shocks.
