Colorizing, or colorization, is the process of adding color to grayscale or monochrome images and footage. The goal is to produce a plausible, convincing representation of how the subject might have appeared in color. Colorizing can apply to photographs, film, video frames, or drawn artworks and may involve manual painting, computational methods, or a combination.

Historically, colorizing began with manual hand tinting and stencil-based techniques in the 19th and early 20th centuries for photographs and cinema. In early film, processes such as tinting and later Technicolor involved capturing or embedding color information, but true full-color reproduction often required separate prints and labor. The rise of digital imaging from the late 20th century enabled automated and semi-automated colorization workflows, using algorithms and, more recently, artificial intelligence to infer plausible colors from luminance and context.

Modern colorization methods range from manual painting of frames or stills to semi-automatic approaches that propagate color from reference images. Deep learning models can generate color for grayscale images by predicting chrominance channels conditioned on luminance and learned priors, often with user-guided references to influence skin tones and foliage. For video, consistency across frames and temporal coherence are important challenges, addressed by temporal filtering and multi-frame propagation.

Colorization has applications in film restoration, historical documentation, and digital art. It can help accessibility and educational projects by making old material more relatable, though it raises questions about authenticity and the potential for misrepresenting the original appearance.

Ethical and legal considerations include provenance, rights to the original material, and the degree to which color is an artistic interpretation. As a field, colorization continues to evolve with advances in computer vision and color science, balancing fidelity and viewer expectations.
