Technicolor

Technicolor refers to a family of color motion picture processes and to the brand name of a film-production services company. It originated in the 1910s when Herbert Kalmus, Daniel Comstock, and W. Burton Wescott founded Technicolor Motion Picture Corporation to develop a practical color recording system. The technology became prominent in Hollywood from the late 1920s through the 1950s, helping define the look of many classic films.

The core technological approach evolved over time. Early Technicolor systems used two color channels (red and green) captured on separate film stocks, with color separation and dye printing in the lab. In 1932, the three-strip Technicolor process expanded color fidelity by recording red, green, and blue components on three interlocked negatives with a beam-splitter camera. A subsequent dye-transfer printing process produced final prints by transferring dyes onto a single film strip, yielding bright, durable color. The technique required specialized cameras, lab equipment, and skilled technicians and became closely associated with color classics such as The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind (both released in 1939).

Impact and decline: Technicolor’s three-strip process and dye-transfer printing played a dominant role in color cinema for decades, but the rise of single-strip color film stocks, notably Eastmancolor introduced in the 1950s, reduced demand for the lab-based dye-transfer method. Technicolor adapted by licensing its processes, offering post-production services and color-management techniques instead of sole stock production.

Legacy and current form: The Technicolor name survives as part of Technicolor Creative Studios, a global provider of color grading, visual effects, and other media-services work. The legacy of Technicolor remains tied to the distinctive, saturated color aesthetic that defined much of early color cinema.
