Codieren is a term used in Dutch and related contexts to describe the act of turning information into a coded form, or the practice of writing computer software by means of source code. The scope of coderen includes encoding tasks—transforming data according to a defined scheme—as well as programming, where instructions are authored in a programming language to control a computer or automate processes.

Encoding and programming are related but distinct activities. Data encoding translates information into a representation suitable for storage or transmission; examples include character encodings such as ASCII and UTF-8, as well as compression schemes and base64. Encryption is a separate process that uses cryptographic methods to conceal data; it aims for confidentiality rather than readable representation.

Programming, or software development, involves designing, writing, testing, and maintaining source code. Programmers choose languages such as Python, Java, or C++, and rely on tools like editors, integrated development environments, and version control. Compilers and interpreters translate source code into executable form or enable direct execution on a virtual machine.

Historically, encoding concepts emerged with the need to transmit and store information, evolving from telegraph codes and character sets to modern data formats and programming languages. In contemporary contexts, coderen underpins data processing, software production, and information security, and is taught across educational levels as both a technical skill and a field of study.
