Cockpitljus, a Swedish term meaning cockpit lighting, refers to the lighting system installed in the cockpit of aircraft and other vehicles. The primary purpose is to illuminate flight instruments, controls, displays, and crew spaces so operators can read values and operate switches under varying ambient conditions. Good cockpit lighting supports readability, reduces eye strain, and helps preserve pilots’ night vision during critical phases of flight.

The system comprises several components: instrument panel backlighting and face lighting that makes gauges legible; overhead and side panel lighting for general visibility; map or task lights that can focus illumination on specific areas; and indicator lights that convey status information. Some cockpits use red cockpit lighting at night to minimize disruption to night vision, while high-intensity white lighting is reserved for daytime or high-precision tasks.
