Cockpit layout is the arrangement of instruments, displays, and controls in an aircraft's flight deck. It includes the placement of primary flight instruments, navigation and systems displays, switches, yokes or sidesticks, throttles, and console panels. The goal is to provide quick access to information and intuitive control while supporting safety and efficiency in normal and abnormal situations.

Historically cockpits evolved from analog gauges to glass cockpits with digital displays. Today most flight decks organize data on primary flight displays, with secondary navigation and engine or systems displays. Redundancy is achieved through multiple displays and backup instruments, while the autopilot and flight-management systems are integrated into the layout.

Layout varies by aircraft type and manufacturer. Some cockpits use side-sticks, others use traditional control yokes. The control column, center console, overhead panels, and glare shield are arranged to place critical items within the pilots' forward view and comfortable reach. Human factors drive decisions on instrument size, contrast, and reach envelopes.

Modern trends emphasize integrated avionics, fleet standardization, and increased use of glass displays, head-up displays, and touch interfaces. Cockpit layout aims to balance automation with manual control, reduce workload, and improve situational awareness, while providing clear handover points during transitions and ensuring safe handling of failures.
