Coccygeal refers to anything relating to the coccyx, commonly known as the tailbone. The coccyx is the final section of the vertebral column in humans and some other primates. It is situated at the very end of the spine, below the sacrum. Anatomically, the coccyx is composed of typically four fused vertebrae, though the number can vary from three to five. It serves as an attachment point for certain muscles and ligaments of the pelvic floor.

Coccygeal pain, or coccydynia, is a condition characterized by discomfort in the tailbone area. This pain can arise from various causes, including injury such as a fall directly onto the coccyx, childbirth, prolonged sitting, or repetitive strain. Degenerative changes or even tumors are less common causes. The pain is often described as sharp or aching and can be exacerbated by sitting, standing up from a seated position, or during bowel movements.

Treatment for coccygeal issues typically involves conservative measures. Pain management may include over-the-counter pain relievers, topical analgesics, or prescription medications. Modifying activities that aggravate the pain, such as using a cushion when sitting or avoiding prolonged periods of sitting, is also recommended. Physical therapy can be beneficial in strengthening surrounding muscles and improving posture. In severe or persistent cases, medical interventions like corticosteroid injections or, rarely, surgical removal of the coccyx may be considered.
