Cleptoparasitic refers to a form of kleptoparasitism, a behavior where an animal obtains food by stealing it from another animal. This is a specialized form of parasitism, though it does not involve direct physiological harm to the host in the way typical parasites do. Instead, the cleptoparasite relies on the foraging efforts of another species to acquire its meals.

This behavior is observed across a wide range of animal groups, including birds, insects, and mammals. For instance, some birds, like the great skua, will harass other seabirds, forcing them to regurgitate their recently caught prey, which the skua then consumes. In the insect world, certain beetle larvae are cleptoparasitic, often inhabiting the nests of other insects and feeding on the food resources provisioned by the host.

Cleptoparasitism can take several forms. Some cleptoparasites may directly confront the provider of the food, while others might wait for an opportune moment to steal food when the owner is distracted or absent. The success of this strategy often depends on the relative strengths, speeds, and defensive capabilities of both the cleptoparasite and its victim. It represents an alternative foraging strategy that can reduce the energy expenditure associated with hunting or gathering food.
