A cleptoparasite is an animal that obtains food by "stealing" it from another animal. This behavior is a form of kleptoparasitism, a specialized type of feeding where one organism takes food that another has already caught or collected. The term originates from the Greek words kleptein (to steal) and parasitos (one who eats at the table of another).

Cleptoparasitism can take several forms. In some cases, the cleptoparasite directly attacks the host animal and forces it to release its prey. This is commonly observed in birds of prey, such as skuas, which harass other seabirds to make them drop their catches. Other cleptoparasites may wait for the host to abandon its food or simply scavenge from carcasses left by predators.

This feeding strategy is found across a wide range of animal groups, including insects, fish, birds, and mammals. It is often employed by animals that are less efficient hunters or have a higher energy requirement for foraging. While it can be costly for the host animal, it can be a relatively low-risk and energy-efficient way for the cleptoparasite to acquire food. The success of cleptoparasitism depends on the relative abilities of the parasite and its host, as well as the environmental conditions.
