Chukchans are an indigenous people inhabiting the eastern coast of the Chukchi Peninsula and neighboring islands in the Russian Far East. The majority of the Chukchans reside in Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, with a smaller population found in the Magadan Oblast.

The Chukchans traditionally subsisted on a diet of marine mammals, fish, berries, and other local wildlife, with a strong emphasis on sea ice hunting. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, their economy was significantly impacted by Siberian fur trade. As a result, many Chukchans learned to adapt to new economic systems and assimilated with Russian culture.

Chukchi language, classified as part of the Eskimo-Aleut language family, is still spoken by the community. Their primary spiritual practices revolve around animism and feature a complex pantheon of nature spirits. Grave sites and burial grounds in Chukchi culture typically consisted of small mounds accompanied by stone monuments and specific offerings to honor the deceased.

Chukcha society was traditionally organized around kinship and communal units rather than a hierarchical system. Decisions were often made through a consensus-based approach. Residence patterns were flexible and adaptive, often shifted between summer fishing villages, fall hunting camps, and winter villages focused on whaling and sea ice hunting.

Despite efforts to preserve Chukcha traditions and language, modern patterns of intermarriage and demographic shift have affected their cultural identity. Overall, the Chukchans' strong connection to their natural environment and pragmatic efforts to adapt to changing external pressures have had a profound impact on their collective resilience.
