Chairpeople, commonly referred to as chairpersons or chairs, are individuals who preside over meetings, committees, or deliberative bodies. They guide governance, ensure orderly proceedings, and represent the organization in official capacities. The title is used across civic, corporate, academic, and nonprofit settings, though the exact powers and duties vary by bylaws, charter, and jurisdiction.

Typical responsibilities include presiding at meetings, setting the agenda (often in collaboration with the secretary or clerk), enforcing rules of order, facilitating discussion, ensuring fair participation, and interpreting bylaws. Chairs may also sign official documents, represent the body externally, appoint or supervise committees, and oversee governance processes or staff relations as defined by the organization.

Selection and tenure vary widely. Chairs may be elected by the board or by members, appointed by executives or founders, or rotated among members. Terms are often fixed and renewable, with removal possible for cause. In some bodies, the chair is a non-voting or tie-breaking figure, while in others voting powers reside elsewhere.

The term is increasingly neutral in form; "chair" or "chairperson" is common, though "chairpeople" appears occasionally to emphasize plurality or gender inclusivity. Most organizations use the plural "chairs" when referring to more than one person holding the role.
