It is used to label conditions, findings, or pathologies that involve both the brain and the retina, typically reflecting shared vascular, developmental, or degenerative processes. The term is not the name of a single disease, but a way to categorize disorders with dual involvement of cerebral and retinal tissues.

One well-known example is cerebroretinal microangiopathy with calcifications and cysts (CRMCC), a rare neurovascular disorder. CRMCC features progressive small-vessel disease in the brain and retina. Brain imaging may reveal calcifications and periventricular cysts, while the retina can show vascular abnormalities such as telangiectasia that can contribute to visual impairment. The condition demonstrates the core idea of cerebroretinal involvement through parallel pathology in both organ systems.

Diagnosis typically combines neuroimaging (computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging) and ophthalmologic examination to document brain and retinal changes. Genetic testing may be employed to identify causative mutations in CRMCC or related cerebroretinal conditions, reflecting genetic heterogeneity across cases. Differential diagnosis includes other conditions that cause brain calcifications or retinal vasculopathy, as well as broader leukoencephalopathies with ocular involvement.

Management is generally supportive and involves a multidisciplinary approach to address neurological and ophthalmic symptoms. There is no widely applicable disease-modifying therapy for all cerebroretinal syndromes, and prognosis varies depending on the underlying condition and the extent of brain and retinal involvement.
