Centralprocessing refers to the primary computational unit of a computer system. Often called the central processing unit (CPU) or processor, it is responsible for executing instructions from a computer program. The CPU performs the basic arithmetic, logic, controlling, and input/output operations specified by the instructions. It acts as the brain of the computer, directing and coordinating the activities of all other components.

The CPU typically consists of several key parts, including the arithmetic logic unit (ALU), which performs calculations and logical operations, and the control unit, which interprets instructions and directs the flow of data. Registers are also integral, providing high-speed temporary storage for data and instructions being processed. The speed at which a CPU can execute instructions is measured in clock speed, usually in gigahertz (GHz).

Modern CPUs are highly complex integrated circuits, often containing billions of transistors. They have evolved significantly from early mechanical calculators to sophisticated multi-core processors capable of handling multiple tasks simultaneously. The performance and capabilities of a computer are largely determined by the power and efficiency of its centralprocessing unit.
